This week’s writing exercise from poetry class:

My professor provided us with two pieces of paper: one with a picture of modern art on it and the other with an action like “pull your hair” or “rub your hands.” We were told to do the action while look at the art and then free write about it. I got “write standing up & hunched over” with the picture below by Jack Archer. The point of the exercise was to perhaps challenge our typical writing habits/styles and to see what we would create in very abnormal circumstances. While I didn’t love the exercise, I did write something very unique to my style and was very interested by this fact: because I was writing in an uncomfortable position, I found myself writing in short, abrupt sentences as if to express some of the angst or limitations of my physical state.

The bent.
The kneeling.
The crossed.
The swallowed.
The electric.
The buzzing.
The truth.
The blood rush.
The moment.
The cramp.
The numb.
The believer.
The lost.
The found.
The favorite.
The easy.
The silent.
The so, so quiet.
The open.
The hinged.
The final.
The funeral.
The mourning.
The closest.
The last.
The last.
